Discover Today, Protect Tomorrow with Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari

Category: News Stories

Set sail on New Zealand’s most distinctive whale and dolphin watching safari, departing right from central Auckland. Enjoy a 4.5-hour cruise aboard the comfortable Dolphin Explorer as you journey into the spectacular Hauraki Gulf Marine Park in search of its rich and varied marine life.

The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park consists of 1.2 million hectares, over 50 islands, 6 marine reserves. It is one of the most abundant and diverse marine parks in the world and over 25% of the Southern Hemisphere’s marine mammals have been seen in the Marine Park. It is visited by more than 20% of the world’s seabirds and is home to the Critically Endangered Bryde’s whale – one of only a handful of coastal populations of this species in the world. There is so much to see out in the Hauraki Gulf!

Join our qualified marine researchers on board New Zealand’s most accessible marine research vessel as your experience begins at the Viaduct Basin, conveniently located within walking distance of Auckland’s central hotels and accommodation. Step aboard our spacious 65-foot (20-metre) catamaran and relax as we head out across one of the world’s most abundant marine environments.

From the open deck, take in sweeping views of Auckland’s iconic landmarks, including the Harbour Bridge, North Head, Devonport, and the striking volcanic cone of Rangitoto Island. Keep watch for orca and dolphins, often spotted within the inner Waitematā Harbour.

Throughout the journey, our crew share engaging commentary, while onboard marine science experts carry out research and invite you to take part in interactive activities.
As we explore a wild and ever-changing environment, no two trips are the same. While sightings often include Bryde’s whales and common dolphins, you may also encounter pygmy blue whales, New Zealand fur seals, sharks, manta rays, turtles, and a wide variety of seabirds—including the little blue penguin.

On the return to Auckland, for those keen to delve deeper, an optional research presentation offers further insight into the wildlife encountered during your safari.

Conservation is at the heart of everything we do and is a core principle of our business. We are privileged to operate in the stunning environment of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Everyone in our company takes our responsibility to protect our natural heritage and preserve our environment seriously.

Alongside us, our passengers also help to protect our environment, with a dollar from each ticket purchased going towards the Hauraki Gulf Guardians fund which supports organisations and programs that aim to regenerate the Hauraki Gulf and make it resilient to future changes.
