Responsible Tourism - Delivered not just promised

Category: News Stories

So many promise “ Responsible “ tourism , especially tourist boards looking for a new promotional angle and to have a more quality / less quantity approach . So let us start with how responsible tourism is described :

Responsible tourism means planning, managing, and carrying out tourism activities with care for the environment, local traditions, and the local economy. It is not only about reducing negative impacts, but also about creating real benefits for the people who live in the destination and improving the visitor experience.

Difficult to disagree with any of that . But at times the reality is different . OK you can limit the number of new hotels , but by allowing even bigger condo’s is  not going to help . Plus has the  extra  required sanitation/ sewage  been carefully assessed , and of course the road infrastructure    .  Is the  approved development on virgin land or have the local authorities  had to “ resettle “ a village community against their wishes.

You want to encourage travellers to visit  markets and buy local . But without  control it can go from an authentic experience enjoyed by residents and visitors to just something bland and higher priced , and causing resentment on both sides . If the tourists consume all the local produce and/ or it’s a price the locals can no longer afford , is that really responsible .

Is the balance between hotels beds and airline seats right . I was once told by a regional  tourism minister that the balance was right , but it was obvious he was not taking into account villas as “ they are not hotels  “ . Not sure how he thought villa guests arrived !!

But let me move on to a hotel that to me has truly embraced responsible tourism – The Datai , Langkawi , Malaysia . I have stayed numerous times , including the opening back in 1993 . Instant wow- each and every time , and when you delve behind the scenes it gets even more impressive and innovative. So this is the Datai view on how responsible tourism has evolved and the plans going forward . Impressive in thought and action . So let us see what they say .

“At The Datai Langkawi,  responsible tourism allied with sustainability sits at the heart of everything we do, guided by The Datai Pledge, our regenerative and conservation framework. One of our ambitious commitments is Zero Waste to Landfill, supported by robust on-site infrastructure and strong cross-functional collaboration. In 2024, the resort processed 96% of its total waste through on-site sorting, recycling, composting, upcycling, and responsible treatment, reflecting both the effectiveness of our systems and collective commitment across all departments.

Community engagement is another responsible practice supporting the long-term wellbeing of Langkawi’s communities. We collaborate closely with local partners including The Kanshalife Project, Suri Lifestyle, MareCet, and Geng Bersih Kampung, supporting initiatives that range from upcycling and income generation for vulnerable groups to marine conservation and grassroots environmental action.  It is important to involve  local communities in this , particularly children ( see picture above , building awareness in the classroom )

Through Consciously Datai, a responsible -sustainability-forward stay experience, we invite guests to immerse themselves in nature and conservation while giving back through The Datai Pledge. The response over the years has been highly positive, generating hundreds of room nights, with 95% of guests opting to contribute to The Datai Pledge during their stay.

What sets The Datai Langkawi apart is our commitment to transparency and measurable impact. Our Annual Impact Report provides clear evidence of our initiatives, progress, and outcomes, while our achievement of EarthCheck ECO Gold Certification for Terrestrial Tourism (the first and only resort in the world to receive this recognition) further validates our leadership in sustainable luxury.

Looking ahead, our focus remains on strengthening circular initiatives, including sustaining our Zero Waste to Landfill goal, advancing our carbon neutrality roadmap, and expanding renewable energy adoption – ensuring lasting positive impact for both people and planet. “

An example to all of us . Clear , well defined road to a better future for all of us . We all have a part to play .
