At The Retreat Koh Chang, responsible travel is a lived philosophy, shaping how nature, community and quiet luxury come together in balance.
Tucked between Kai Bae Beach and a quiet fishing village, the resort offers uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Thailand and a sense of calm shaped by simplicity and seclusion. The resort regards itself as a true place of retreat, where nature is respected, resources are thoughtfully managed and stillness is protected.
Responsible Experiences
Experiences at The Retreat Koh Chang are designed to encourage slow, responsible exploration and a meaningful connection with the island. Complimentary mountain bikes invite guests to explore coastal paths and quiet village roads at a gentle pace, while seasonal activities such as making hand-scrubs and herbal compresses offer insight into local craftsmanship.
Guests can also join a private Spice Trail hike, exploring the forest on foot while learning about the region’s diverse flora and the traditional uses of native plants. Guided walks through Mu Ko Chang National Park reveal waterfalls, wildlife and untouched rainforest, while visits to Bangbao Fisherman Village support small businesses and foster respectful, authentic cultural exchange.
Flora of Koh Chang
Commissioned to mark the 125th anniversary of the first Danish botanical exploration of Thailand, Flora of Koh Chang reflects The Retreat Koh Chang's commitment to preserving and sharing the island’s botanical heritage. Launched during the opening weekend of Flora of Koh Chang 2025, a month-long outdoor exhibition celebrating early botanical studies, the book documents 50 commonly found plant species that shape Koh Chang’s landscape today. A copy of Flora of Koh Chang is placed in every guest room, inviting visitors to explore the rainforest with greater awareness and a deeper connection to the island’s natural environment. The project is supported by a two-year ecological and cultural study conducted with botanists and other experts. The research informs both conservation efforts and guest experiences, ensuring tourism remains rooted in education, respect and local context.
Conservation
Conservation efforts at The Retreat Koh Chang extend across both land stewardship and daily resource management. In collaboration with Mu Ko Chang National Park, the resort supports the restoration of Bantigue, an endangered plant often harvested illegally, by maintaining its own nursery to encourage regeneration. Now in its second year, the project has successfully cultivated 20 young saplings for replanting. Energy use is monitored daily and supplemented by solar power, while water is treated on-site and recycled for landscape irrigation.
Community Empowerment
Regional hiring and internal growth are prioritised, while guest experiences are co-created with local communities to encourage meaningful cultural exchange and learning. Design choices reflect this ethos, blending Thai craftsmanship with modern tropical aesthetics through the use of repurposed teak wood and sustainable materials. Inspired by the island’s natural environment, local artists help shape a sanctuary that supports livelihoods and celebrates Koh Chang’s cultural identity.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity is carefully protected at The Retreat Koh Chang, where more than 50 plant species thrive alongside regular visits from great hornbills, common mynas and Chinese pond herons. The gardens were developed in consultation with botanical experts to reflect the island’s natural character. An off-site garden serves as both a plant nursery and a food source for the restaurant and staff canteen, with surplus plants sold through a community garden shop. Compost made from food waste enriches the soil, while treated, recycled water is used for irrigation. This chemical-free, closed-loop approach supports regeneration, minimises waste, and allows the gardens to evolve in balance with Koh Chang’s ecosystem.
