This month we're shining a spotlight on Adventure Travel in the Asia Pacific region. We've asked Sophie Rowley, PATA Executive Committee Member & Sales Manager of EXO Travel for her top tips on selling Adventure Travel .
Adventure Travel continues to show growing demand in the PATA region. Cycling remains top of the list, especially amongst the 50-60-something age market. E-bikes are becoming ever popular which has opened up cycling tours to a whole new demographic of travellers, particularly on group tours.
Be sure to emphasize a good availability of e-bikes and you should see immediate results. With road quality continuing to improve in places like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, new cycling routes are starting to open up, meaning guests can also avoid busy main roads and enjoy cycling in quieter, more remote and scenic areas.
For softer adventure tours focused towards the 30-40-something market as well as families, combining multi-activities to include experiences like short hikes, kayaking and snorkeling, combined with cultural immersion and chill out time, are also growing in popularity. Destinations like Thailand and Bali have a large choice of fun activities which are sure to draw interest.
We're seeing an increase in two types of bookers. The early birds take advantage of special discounts and sign up for tours at least 10-12 months in advance if not sooner. On the flip side, the younger market is leaving it late, preferring to do things on a whim and booking within sixty days of travel, even as late as thirty days for some.
As for forward bookings, Japan remains in huge demand for adventure seekers and I can't see that changing in 2026. The sooner you book the better, especially for the peak Sakura and Autumn seasons.
Meanwhile Thailand, due to easy access from the UK and affordable pricing, continues to offer something for everyone. From hiking the hills around Chiang Rai, sea kayaking in Phuket or rock climbing in Krabi, it's an adventure playground and continues to prove ever popular
