Traditional festival meets contemporary celebration at the 2017 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival
The annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival will return this year from 2-4 June 2017. Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association, the much anticipated event will see some 3,500 athletes from 100 local teams take part, as well as international teams from 15 countries and regions including the UK.
The Dragon Boat Carnival will be held at Victoria Harbour and along Central Harbourfront and in true Hong Kong style, an ancient Chinese festival has become one of the world’s greatest parties! The event will feature four exciting elements:
1. Renowned Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races
2. San Miguel BeerFest offering visitors complimentary beer, entertainment and live music performances
3. Food Trucks Gala featuring an array of mouth-watering treats from some of the sixteen food trucks that were recently introduced in Hong Kong, as part of an initiative designed to help a new wave of start up chefs in Asia.
4. Coveted 20th Anniversary Trophy in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Dragon boat teams from each of the 18 Districts will be invited to compete in this championship race.
Hong Kong is recognised as the birthplace of modern competitive dragon boat racing, having held the first international race in Shaukeiwan in 1976, with nine fishermen dragon boat crews competing against a visiting crew from Nagasaki, Japan. This humble event went on to spark an explosion of worldwide interest in dragon boat racing, transforming this ancient Chinese fold ritual into a modern international sport, which has become an important event on the sporting calendar.
