PATA UK & Ireland Partners with Small Steps Charity
At the 2017 PATA UK & Ireland annual Christmas Lunch we partnered with Small Steps Projects to raise money for the Takhmao Project. The money raised helped Small Steps to build their first hygiene and sanitation station in Takhmao, Cambodia; which not only improved access to showers and toilets for locals in the region, but it also reduced sickness. PATA were able to create more steps for the charity by raising the profile of Small Steps Projects, enabling them to raise funds through Big Give to create another hygiene station in Laos, with a new Ugandan project in the pipeline.
A hygiene and sanitation station is a safe place where children can wash and go to the toilet, with support from staff on hygiene. When Small Steps develop the stations, they can make them larger and more accessible to the families of these children, so that mothers can also wash and learn more about hygiene and sanitation themselves and take that home with them. Small Steps also provide materials they need to stay clean: tooth paste, soap, shampoo, washing powder, support with periods. Not only does all this affect their health but also their dignity. Scavengers communities are often looked down on and ostracised because of how they look and smell so to be able to clean them and make them feel human again gives them back their dignity and encourages others to treat them with respect too.
