Birds of Paradise: The Ultimate Quest BBC 2
In 2004 BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner was shot and left for dead following an al-Qaeda ambush in Saudi Arabia. While he lay in hospital, during a long and painful recovery, he thought of all the opportunities he’d missed, particularly his ambition, as a confirmed birdwatcher, to go to Papua New Guinea and see the elusive birds of paradise.
Last year Gardner fulfilled this ambition; despite using a wheelchair and with typical determination he embarked on a three-week expedition. The B.B.C. had commissioned a two part series to film the journey. Frank’s travelling companion was veteran explorer Benedict Allen, who had spent months living in PNG in his 20’s – and was welcomed back by the villagers as a son.
Frank and Benedict’s adventures make fascinating viewing giving a unique and touching insight into the people and landscapes of Papua New Guinea. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08dxr8d via @bbciplayer
